January 2003 (Vol 79.4): Sophomores Make Their Mark
2003 Year End Roosevelt Boys Basketball Banquet
March 24, 2003, at the Ramada Inn (Northgate)
After a delicious pasta dinner provided by "Perche no?" (Chris Kong's family's restaurant), the head coach of each team in the program (Ian Malcolm - 4th Team, Joe Lewis - 3rd Team, Forrest Ward - JV, and Rob Sarmiento - Varsity) stepped to the podium and delivered a summary of each team's season before introducing and bringing individual players to the front of the room with a summary of their season and/or interesting anecdote. Each player also received a participation award (or for varsity lettermen, their letter) and a written evaluation of their playing. After introductions of individual varsity players and summaries of their contributions on and off the court this season, the following varsity team members were recognized:
Most Improved: Warren Ichoda-Cummings
Coaches' Award: Casey Pursell
Most Valuable: Marcus Williams
Captains: Kyle Nicholes, Marcus Williams, Calvin Hsia
The graduating seniors (Calvin Hsia, Mark Gano, Warren Ichoda-Cummings, Kyle Nicholes, John Chevigny, Cleary Clark, and Alex Jessup) were thanked for their hard work and and contribution in helping to improve the Roosevelt program over the last few years. The seniors were awarded their display name from the roster on the Ben Snowden Court wall. They were also reminded that they will always be a part of the Roosevelt Basketball family, that they can always come back and participate in the program, and that the coaches and other players will always be there to lend a helping hand (if needed) to them.
Before the evening ended, all returning players were reminded that preparation for next season begins now. They should be in the gym playing as much ball as possible, hitting the weights, and looking into camps and other club/rec teams for this spring and summer (to talk about potential opportunities, contact Coach Sarmiento). Each player in this year's program was given a written evaluation including areas of emphasis to concentrate on improving. These areas of improvement shouldn't be taken as a criticism but should be worked on in a productive manner.
Coach Sarmiento also took a moment to thank all the parents who worked so hard throughout the year. Without their often un-noticed and unsung work behind the scenes, the year wouldn't have been nearly as successful or enjoyable as it was. Thanks once again.
Sophomores Make Their Mark: Underclassmen Play a Big Role in Basketball's New Found Success
Sam Ricketts, staff reporter, January 2003 (Vol 79.4)
In a KingCo conference normally ruled by Eastside schools in all sports, boys basketball has been notoriously dominated by the city teams. Say what you will about clichés, the fact is that three of the best boy's basketball teams in the KingCo reside in Seattle, those being Garfield, Franklin, and Roosevelt. The team is a solid 6-7 (4-3 in Mountain Division play), and after a somewhat shaky start, the Rough Riders have settled in and are starting to look like one of the best teams in the league.
Although they are still hovering around the .500 mark, they have the potential and raw talent to be doing much better. Junior Guard Norris Frederick said it best when he stated, "We just need to play hard and play as a team, and we can't be touched." The team has suffered some tough losses at the hands of teams such as Garfield and Inglemoor, in games that really could have gone either way.
The most remarkable thing about the Roosevelt boys basketball team may very well be the fact that the starting lineup consists of three sophomores: Marcus Williams, Casey Pursell, and David Grant. "We're very young," commented Coach Sarmiento, "We're just learning. We know we're going to be in the playoffs, we just don't know where we're going to be in the playoffs."
Williams is fourth in the conference in points per game, with 19.6, and the '05 contingent accounts for about 30 points per game as a group, which is no small feat, considering that it is about half of the Riders' total points per game.
Pursell commented, "We're doing swell, we're not playing as well as we thought we'd be doing, but we're halfway through the season and I think we'll be able to pick it up." The other starters are senior Kyle Nicholes (12.2 pts/gm) and junior Norris Frederick (9.6 pts/gm), and key contributors are seniors John Chevigny, Cleary Clark, Gabe Scarpelli, and Calvin Hsia.
"We're a very talented team, especially cause we practice next to the girls," said senior Gabe Scarpelli. When asked about the youth of the team, he also added, "We have the most skilled sophomores in the league, and they'll only get better with age."
Considering the youth of the team, they should not only do well in this year's playoffs, but in the years to come. Next year, they will return four starters, and it seems they can only improve. If this team plays the consistent, talented game they're capable of, the sky's the limit, so look for them in the playoffs, and maybe even a trip to state. Nicholes summarized it easily, "We're coming together as a team, and we're filthy."
