Vs. Cleveland: Dec 05, 2002
The Eagles jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead in the first minute and a half, but the Riders fought back and tied the game before trailing 18-17 at the end of the first quarter and having the Eagles stretch the lead to 33-27 at halftime. Kyle Nicholes and Marcus Williams combined for 22 points for Roosevelt in the half. In a closely fought second half, defense dominated for both sides. In the end, the 24 Roosevelt turnovers (compared to 17 by Cleveland) and some untimely difficulty at the free throw stripe (16-28 for the game, including some missed opportunities on the front end of 1-on-1's) allowed the Eagles to stretch the lead and pull out the victory. Marcel Pellum lead the victors with 15 points, including 4 threes, while Marcus Williams lead all scorers in a losing cause with 25.

Vs. Newport: Dec 10, 2002
A closely matched first half found Newport clinging to a 25-17 halftime advantage. Roosevelt's Norris Frederick provided a big offensive boost off the bench in the second half, helping power the Riders to tie the game at 31 in the middle of the 3rd quarter. But just when it appeared that momentum had swung in the Rider's favor, Newport was able to right their ship and outscore Roosevelt 22-12 down the stretch to pull out the win. Frederick's 13 second half points lead all scorers, but Newport's balanced attack (5 players scoring between 9 and 12 points) provided enough punch for the victory.

Vs. Franklin: Dec 12, 2002
Franklin came into this battle as the #1-ranked team in the state. But even before the opening tip occurred, the balance of the game changed with the suspension (for team rules violations) of 6 Quakers, including All-State point guard Aaron Brooks. Though Franklin was playing shorthanded, a very solid core group remained (including All-League performer Kellen Williams,) so the game would still be a valid test and undoubtedly a hard fought game for Roosevelt.
Roosevelt started hot right from the get-go. The Roughriders held an 11-point advantage at the end of the first, highlighted by Norris Frederick's torrid shooting (13 in the first quarter, including three 3-pointers) and Marcus Williams' one-handed, follow-up throw down. Roosevelt's solid play continued in the second quarter, but the Quakers narrowed the margin to 8 at the break with Zenrique Tellez's drives to the basket and put backs on offensive boards. The third quarter continued according to pattern, setting the stage for a memorable final quarter.
Several Riders contributed clutch baskets down the stretch. Casey Pursell, who also contributed outstanding defense throughout the contest, sunk a slashing leaner while being fouled (also sinking the ensuing free throw) to push the lead back to 8 at one point. Kyle Nicholes, who totaled 10 points in the 4th quarter, sunk two big threes in the fourth to help keep the Riders on top. Marcus Williams also piped in with 10 in the 4th, including a solid 6 for 7 from the charity stripe down the stretch. The stellar board work of David Grant and Cleary Clark helped keep the boards pretty even, until both fouled out in the fourth, at which point the Quakers' primary offensive consisted of put-backs. But despite Franklin crashing the offensive boards, the Riders were able to pull off a dramatic 81-75 upset victory.
Marcus Williams finished with 24 points, while Nicholes and Frederick scored 17 and 16 respectively for the victorious Riders. Kellen Williams topped all scorers with 29 while Zenrique Tellez added 21 in a losing cause for Franklin.

Vs. Lake Washington: Dec 20, 2002
Roosevelt jumped to a quick 12-0 lead right out of the gate, as Norris Frederick sunk early outside bombs, Marcus Williams finished on slashing drives, and Jullian Evans provided low post offense. While the offense was clicking, Casey Pursell and the rest of the stifling Rider defense (as well as some foul trouble) helped contain the Kangs' leading scorer, All-League 6'4" junior Andrew Haskins, to 4 points in the first half. Marcus Williams led Roosevelt's first half scoring with 15 points, including a one-handed tip jam that highlighted the first half and found Roosevelt leading 43-23 at the break.
The Riders struggled a bit to keep their focus and momentum in the second half, as Lake Washington surged to cut the lead to 9 in the third. But the Riders were able to hang on to their lead and put the game away on timely baskets by Norris Frederick and Kyle Nicholes 11 for 12 free-throw shooting in the 4th period. Mark Gano finished off the scoring for the Riders, nailing 2 free throws in the waning moments. Andrew Haskins ended up leading all scorers and pouring in 29 points in a losing effort. Norris Frederick lead the Roughriders with 19 points, while Marcus Williams and Kyle Nicholes both chipped in 17.

Vs. Mountlake Terrace: Dec 27, 2002
The Roughriders started hot, holding a 19-9 edge after one quarter powered by Norris Frederick's 11 points (including three 3-pointers). But Mountlake Terrace fought back in the second quarter to take a 6 point lead at the half, with Ryan Strieby and Jacob Caldwell combining for 16 points in the second period. The Hawkeyes extended the lead slightly in the 3rd period before Roosevelt rallied to cut the lead to 3 in the early fourth quarter. This is as close as the Riders got. Ryan Strieby provided much of the offense again, scoring 10 points in the 4th as the Hawkeyes pulled away to their 15 point victory. Sean Gearin's consistent game resulted in 20 points (leading all scorers) for Terrace while Strieby finished with 19 and Ronald Stiel-Williams chipped in 11. Norris Frederick and Marcus Williams totaled 15 and 13 respectively for Roosevelt. Casey Pursell provided excellent defense as well as 12 points for the Riders.

Vs. Ballard: Dec 28, 2002
Two league rivals met in the consolation game of the Edmonds District Holiday Tournament at Mountlake Terrace HS. The Riders jumped on Ballard from the onset, leading the Beavers by 9 at the end of the first quarter and by 16 at the break. Norris Frederick led the scoring with 16 in the first half, while Ballard's Cody Gray did his best to keep the Beavers close with 13 first-half points. Roosevelt opened up the second half with a strong defensive effort, holding the Beavers to 8 points in the third quarter. The Riders opened up a 26 point advantage (58-32) at one point.
Persistent effort allowed Ballard to narrow the gap, but never closer than the final 15-point margin. 10 Roughriders tallied in the scoring column, with Frederick, Kyle Nicholes, and Marcus Williams finishing in double digits (18, 12, and 12 respectively). Cleary Clark, Jullian Evans, Warren Ichoda-Cummings, Calvin Hsia, Gabe Scarpelli, John Chevigny, and Taylor Argens all supplied quality minutes off the bench for the Riders. Ballard shooting guard Cody Gray finished with 18 points while point guard Jason Wilson chipped in 10. The teams meet again in a league game on Tuesday, February 11, at Ballard.

Vs. Garfield: Jan 7, 2003
Garfield jumped on the Riders early, grabbing a quick 12-6 edge in the first. Roosevelt pulled within 2 (12-10) behind the strength of Casey Pursell's 6 first quarter points, but the end of a see-saw first quarter found the Bulldogs again stretching out the lead to 8 points. The second was another quarter of big runs. Garfield opened up a 17-point lead (29-12) before Roosevelt rallied on the strength of several Kyle Nicholes threes and Marcus Williams nines to get back in the game at the half, with Garfield holding a smaller 36-27 edge. Williams ended the half with 11 points for Roosevelt while Brian Schulkin paced Garfield with the 10 points he scored in the first half.
The Riders continued to work hard and chip away at the Bulldog lead in the third period, closing the quarter down by 6 (49-43) and getting several of the Garfield post players in foul trouble. Schulkin got his fourth and Salahuddin his third in the quarter, and both had to sit for significant minutes. Mid-way through the 4th, Roosevelt narrowed the Garfield edge to 52-48, but could not close the gap any further, despite Garfield turnovers and free throw shooting woes (7 of 16 in the 4th quarter; 13 for 35 in the game) which continued to keep the door open for the Riders to claw back in the game. In the end, Garfield prevailed by seven points (60-53), largely on the strength of outworking the Riders, gaining crucial loose balls, and beating the Riders on the offensive glass.
Omar Thompson led Garfield with 15 points. The Bulldog posts contributed, with Brian Schulkin (10 points), Wes Irwin (9 points), and Yusuf Salahuddin (7 points) all chipping in at the offensive end. While Garfield's Brandon Sanchez only scored 5 points, he contributed significantly on drive and dishes on offense and with pressure at the defensive end of the floor. Roosevelt's offense was mostly a two-pronged attack with Marcus Williams leading all scorers with 23 points and Kyle Nicholes adding another 18.

Vs. Bothell: Jan 10, 2003
After Bothell nailed a three-pointer to take an early 3-0 lead, Roosevelt started a 20-4 run which gave them a 13 point lead. Bothell finished the first quarter on a 6 point run of their own to narrow the gap to 7 points, but Marcus Williams' 13 second-quarter points (including two 3-pointers and a dunk) helped stretch the lead to 12 at the half. David Grant chipped in 7 first half points for the Riders. The Riders held a significant advantage in turnover margin in the half, turning the ball over only 8 times. Rocky Jorgensen paced the Cougars with 8 first half points.
Bothell came out with new resolve at the beginning of the second half and were able to narrow the gap to 6 near the end of the third. But, on successive trips down down the court, Roosevelt's Norris Frederick drained 3-pointers to extend the lead back to 12 and get the Roughriders rolling again. Midway through the 4th, the Riders were up by 19 points (their greatest lead of the game) and later Marcus Williams finished off his 22 point, 9 rebound (game highs in both categories) effort with a thunderous dunk off a steal.
Rocky Jorgensen led Bothell with 15 points, while Bryce Land chipped in 10 points and 8 rebounds. Norris Frederick finished with 11 points in a balanced Rider attack which found 7 players scoring above 5 points.

Vs. Inglemoor: Jan 14, 2003
Roosevelt started off with an early edge in the contest, jumping to a seven-point lead late in the first and leading 15-10 after one quarter. But Inglemoor used outstanding outside shooting in the second period (sinking 6 three's in the quarter) to strike back. Inglemoor led by as many as 9 points halfway through the period, before Roosevelt came back to narrow the deficit to 5 (34-29) at the break. Inglemoor shot an unconscious 8 for 11 from behind the arc in the first half, with Mark Frisbee leading the way with four 3's and 12 points. Roosevelt was paced by the inside play of Jullian Evans (10 points on 5 of 5 shooting) and David Grant (6 points).
The second half opened with an evenly-fought third period which ended with Inglemoor still clinging to a 45-42 advantage, setting the stage for a tight finish. Roosevelt clawed their way back on top in the 4th quarter and the lead see-sawed back and forth. With the game tied at 58, the Vikings' Ken Nwaelele scored on a dribble drive to give Inglemoor a late 2-point. Roosevelt had several chances to tie late, but free throws by Cleary Clark and a jumper by Marcus Williams all rimmed out. Inglemoor's Jeff Ratti sunk two from the stripe to give the Vikings their final margin of four.
Ratti led five Vikings in double digits with 14 points, with Jordan White-Frisbee also adding 10 points and leading the Vikings with 9 rebounds despite foul problems. The Riders had four players in double digits with David Grant leading the way, tallying 14 (and 6 rebounds). Roosevelt's Marcus Williams finished with 10 boards.

Vs. Juanita: Jan 17, 2003
The first half of the game was an up-tempo and close affair with neither team holding more than a small lead. It ending with Roosevelt holding a slight 39-38 edge. Juanita's 5' 11" senior guard Jacob Leslie had an outstanding first half, shooting 4-6 from behind the 3-point arc and racking up 22 points in the half. On the other end, Roosevelt was able to grab a slight edge by pounding the boards. The Riders held a decisive 18-10 rebound edge in the half, with 10 of their boards coming at the offensive end. Marcus Williams paced Roosevelt's first half efforts with 15 points and 7 rebounds.
After the Roughriders stretched their lead slightly in the third period, which ended with Roosevelt holding a 57-53 advantage, the stage was set for a memorable 4th quarter. Roosevelt was able to build a 6-point lead with several minutes left, but Juanita continued to fight back, taking advantage of Roosevelt's missed free throws and the scoring of Jacob Leslie to take a 2 point lead with 20 seconds remaining. The Riders gave the ball to Marcus Williams, who took the ball coast to coast, nailing a heavily contested game-tying shot in the lane to tie the score at 69-69. After a last gasp 3-pointer by Juanita rimmed out, the game headed to overtime.
In overtime, the Riders took charge right from the outset, scoring the first 6 points of OT (4 by Marcus Williams, 2 by David Grant). Roosevelt eventually stretched out their lead to 11 (at 84-73), their run punctuated by 2 Norris Frederick breakaway dunks before Juanita fought back one last time. The Rebels were able to close the gap to 85-80 as time ran out and the Riders escaped with a hard-fought road victory.
A game key for Roosevelt was the significant 38-26 edge they held on the glass, while Juanita hung tough by using a large edge from three point land (8-1 edge in 3-PT FGM) and excellent free throw shooting (14-16 for the game, compared to Roosevelt's tepid 16-28 shooting from the stripe). Jacob Leslie's outstanding 43 point effort (including seven 3-pointers) kept Juanita in the game all evening. Roosevelt's Marcus Williams' 4th quarter and overtime heroics topped off a 35 point, 10 rebound effort. The other double digit scorers in the contest were Roosevelt's Kyle Nicholes (14 points and 7 rebounds) and Norris Frederick (10), and the Rebels' Jonas Nelson (13).

Vs. Woodinville: Jan 21, 2003
After a hard fought, low-scoring beginning to the contest, Woodinville jumped to a lead late in the first quarter (12-7), but the Riders were able to come back and knot the score, capped by a Marcus Williams half-court heave heave at the buzzer. The Roughriders opened up a six point lead (at 20-14) in the second quarter before the Falcons came back to close the gap at the end of a see-saw first half, which ended with Roosevelt leading 27-26. Marcus Williams lea Roosevelt in the half with 13 points (on 5-9 shooting, including 2 threes). Woodinville stayed in the game by maintaining a 20-12 rebound advantage in the half.
Woodinville took charge of the game in the third period by outscoring the Riders 22-12 in the quarter. Josh Berg lead the way by scoring 11 points in the third period. The Falcons ran clock on offense and continued to maintain their advantage in the fourth, holding on to a 56-46 lead at the 3:20 mark. Roosevelt was able to cause some turnovers and knock down some shots to narrow the gap to 5 (at 56-51) on a David Grant put-back lay up with 2:17 remaining. But this was as close at the Riders would get, as the Falcons would go on a 12-2 run over the remainder of the game to pull away to a comfortable 68-53 victory.
Josh Berg finished with 16 points to lead the Falcons, while Matt Tuiasosopo (9 points and 7 rebounds) and Greg Haslem (10 points and 11 rebounds) contributed to Woodinville's inside dominance (35-27 rebounding edge) in the game. Woodinville's senior 5' 8" point guard Ian Warner also took good care of the ball and nailed 6 of 6 FT's in the 4th quarter to finish with 12 points. Marcus Williams lead Roosevelt with 20 points, while Norris Frederick (12 points) and David Grant (9 points and 7 rebounds) were also leaders at the offensive end for the Riders in a losing cause.

Vs. Eastlake: Jan 28, 2003
Roosevelt caught a potential break as Eastlake entered the game without the services of two post starters, 6' 7" senior center Jason Duty (8.9 ppg) and 6' 5" senior forward Ryan Shane (12.5 ppg). The Riders jumped all over the Wolves early, making their first 7 shots to take an early lead. Kyle Nicholes helped carry Roosevelt offensively, shooting 9 for 11 from the field (including 3 for 3 from behind the arc) in scoring 22 points in the first half as the Riders built a 41-31 halftime lead. The Riders' Marcus Williams also had a solid offensive half, dropping 8 points for Roosevelt. The Roughriders were able to contain Eastlake's outstanding guard tandem of Jason Williams (5' 9" Sr.; 11.8) and Nick Livi (6' 1" Jr.; 15.6), holding them to 2 and 7 points respectively in the first half.
The second half appeared to start with more of the same, as Roosevelt continued to hold a 10 point edge at 51-41 mid way through the 3rd quarter when the Eastlake guard tandem of Livi and Williams got untracked. The two combined for 38 (2nd half: Livi - 20; Williams - 18) of Eastlake's explosive total of 54 second half points, which was too much for Roosevelt to overcome. The Riders finally succumbed to Eastlake, 85-77.
To go along with the solid games of Nick Livi (27 points, 9-14 shooting) and Jason Williams (20 points, 9-13 shooting), Eastlake got solid post play from 6' 6" Jr. Scott McDaniels (14 points, 4 rebounds) and 6' 5" Sr. Brian Molstad (4 points, 7 rebounds) in the absence of Duty and Shane. The Wolves overcame the outstanding performance from Rider senior guard Kyle Nicholes, who shot 11-12 in the game (including 5 for 5 on 3-pointers) in totaling a game-high 28 points. Nicholes also grabbed 11 rebounds in the contest. Roosevelt sophomore forward Marcus Williams contributed a second double-double for the Riders, scoring 13 points while snaring 11 boards.

Vs. Lake Washington: January 31, 2003
Roosevelt used Marcus Williams' steady scoring (between 4-6 points in every quarter) and scoring spurts by several other players throughout the contest to slowly pull away. Williams (11 points in 1st half), Kyle Nicholes (11 points in 1st half), and Cleary Clark (8 points in 1st half) combined for 30 points in the first half as the Riders took a 3 point lead after one period (18-15) and a 7 point lead into the halftime break (36-29).
The second half was more of the same, with the Riders using streaks by different players to press their advantage and widen their lead. In the second half it was Norris Frederick and Casey Pursell who stepped up, both scoring 12 points a piece (to go along with Marcus Williams' 9 second half points) over the final 2 quarters. The Riders' margin continued to grow throughout the second half, with the lead becoming 8 points after three quarters and finishing with an 14 point margin of victory at 71-57.
The Kangs' Andrew Haskins did not start against Roosevelt, but that didn't stop him from being able to impart his typical large impact on the game. Haskins shot 13-21 from the field and 10-15 from the strip in the contest to lead Lake Washington. The 6' 3" junior also led the Kangaroos with 11 boards. No other LW player scored more than 5 points. Marcus Williams led a quartet of Riders in double figures with 20 points (7-12 FGs). Others reaching double figures for Roosevelt included Norris Frederick (14 pts, 6-11 FGs), Casey Pursell (12 pts, 6-8 FGs), and Kyle Nicholes (12 pts, 2 3-pt FGs). Williams' 9 rebounds led the Riders in that category as well.
With the victory, Roosevelt assured itself a spot in the KingCo 4A playoffs.

Vs. Redmond: Feb 4, 2003
Redmond took it to Roosevelt hard from the outset, building a 6-point lead after 1 period and extending the margin to 11 points at the half. Redmond's 6' 8" junior center Stephan Ishmael dominated the paint at the offensive end for the Mustangs, scoring 15 points in the half on 7 of 10 shooting from the field. Norris Frederick did his best to keep the Riders close, leading them with 8 first-half points while Roosevelt's leading scoring tandem of Kyle Nicholes and Marcus Williams was held to a combined 4 first-half points.
In the second half, the Mustangs' 6' 1" junior forward Christian "Chuck" Yeager heated up. He shot 6 of 7, including 3-3 from behind the arc, in scoring 16 second half points. Behind Yeager, the Mustangs second half lead ballooned to as many at 27 (58-31) early in the fourth quarter. The Riders were able to close the gap to 15 late in the contest, but that was as close as they got with Redmond wrapping up 68-55 walloping with sold free throw shooting down the stretch.
Redmond's inside-outside duo of Ishmael and Yeager both finished with over 20 points in the contest. Ishmael finished with 20 points on 9 of 16 shooting (to go along with 4 rebounds), while Yeager lead the Mustangs with 21 points on an efficient 8 of 12 from the field (including 4-4 3-pt in the contest).
Marcus Williams led Roosevelt with 22 points (20 of which came in the second half) and had 5 rebounds. He was aided by Norris Frederick, who scored 11, and Kyle Nicholes, who chipped in 10. Also notable for the Riders was Calvin Hsia, who shot 3-4 from the field in scoring 6 points and grabbing a Roosevelt high 6 boards in the contest (tying with Cleary Clark for team high in rebounds for the game).

Vs. Bothell: Feb 7, 2003
After the Riders scored the first basket of the game to take a 2-0 advantage, Bothell went on a 14-1 spurt to take an early 11 point lead (14-3). Rocky Jorgensen had perfect 4 for 4 shooting from the field (including 2 3's) during the streak. The Riders' Marcus Williams picked up 2 quick fouls during the Bothell spurt and had to sit for the remainder of the first half.
But the Roosevelt bench helped ignite a 23-2 run of their own, allowing the Riders to grab a double-digit bulge of their own at 26-16. Roosevelt starter Norris Frederick led the charge scoring-wise during the run with 8 second-quarter points, while Rider reserves Cleary Clark and Jullian Evans also contributed offensively (4 and 5 points respectively during the 2nd quarter run) to the charge. Although he didn't score, Roughrider freshman guard Carlos McArthur received his first varsity action while helping to steady the Roosevelt offense. But the Riders' run wasn't the last of the half, as the Cougars ended the half on a 11-1 tear to even up the score at 27-27. Bothell's Rocky Jorgensen led all first-half scorers with 13 points, while Norris Frederick lead the Riders with 10.
The third quarter seemed like it was feast or famine for Bothell. Either they were turning it over against a tough Rider press or burning it for layups (both Byrce Land and Marcus Fermon had 3 layups in the quarter for 6 points a piece). At the offensive end for the Riders, Marcus Williams led the way, scoring 6 points in the evenly fought quarter. At the end of the third, Bothell clung to a 43-42 lead.
Entering the fourth quarter with a slim 1 point margin, the Cougars decided to spread the court and take the air out of the basketball. Playing deliberately, they forced the Riders to chase them and foul. Eventually they opened up a small lead. With a 49-46 deficit the Riders had the ball with 2 and a half minutes in the contest. Roosevelt missed their attempt at the basket and in the ensuing melee the ball went out of bounds off of Roosevelt's scrambling, sprawling Cleary Clark underneath the Bothell hoop. After the ball was ruled to be in Bothell's posession, the Cougars' Casey Bollinger was whistled for a technical foul. With 2 free throws and the ball out of bounds, the Riders had the potential to take a one point lead if they converted on all aspects. But the Riders' Kyle Nicholes made 1 of 2 from the line and Roosevelt failed to get any points out of their possession so the Cougars still maintained a 2 point lead with the ball. After several trips down the court in which Roosevelt was forced to foul (the Cougars converted 4 FTs) and failed to convert at the other end, the Cougar lead ballooned to 6 (53-47). After a basket by Nicholes narrowed the gap to 4 (at 53-49), a Bothell turnover gave Roosevelt the opportunity to cut into the lead further but an offensive foul call on the Riders' Nicholes turned the ball back over and allowed Bothell to ice a 57-49 victory.
Bothell's effective delay game allowed them to outlast the Riders. The majority of their offense came from the free throw stripe in the final period, when they were a combined 10-12 as a team. Bothell only scored 2 field goals the entire fourth quarter. Both were layups, one by Bryce Land out of their delay offense (huge basket at the time), the other by Marcus Fermon as time wound down in the contest. Bothell only took 14 shots all told in the second half but was highly efficient on their attempts, sinking 10 of the attempts (none from outside the lane) to finish with a 71.4% field goal percentage in the second half.
Bothell's Bryce Land had a perfect night shooting wise, nailing 6 of 6 from the floor and 8 of 8 from the line to finish with a game high 20 points. Land also snared 5 rebounds. The Cougars Rocky Jorgensen (15 points, 5-9 FGs, 7 rebounds), Marcus Fermon (12 points on 4-6 shooting) and Casey Bollinger (4 points, 7 rebounds) also had solid games which contributed to the victory. Norris Frederick lead Roosevelt with 13 points, with Kyle Nicholes adding 12 for the Riders. Despite the early foul trouble, Roosevelt's Marcus Williams still managed to reach double figures with 10 points. Cleary Clark had a nice line in the loss, scoring 8 points on 3-5 shooting, grabbing 2 boards, and dishing out a team high four assists.
With the victory, Bothell took the driver's seat for second place in the Mountain Division of the KingCo 4A.

Vs. Ballard: Feb 11, 2003
Senior Night at Ballard started quickly and never let up. The Riders took an early advantage with an effective full court press and second chance baskets to take a 24-16 lead to the bench at the end of one quarter. Cody Gray was a one-man wrecking crew for Ballard in the first quarter, keeping the Beavers in the game by scoring 14 of their 16 total points in the period on a perfect 4 for 4 shooting from behind the arc. The Riders' Marcus Williams and Kyle Nicholes both scored 7 in the first to lead Roosevelt. Also notable was Roosevelt freshman Carlos McArthur, who scored his first varsity basket in the first quarter.
The "Cody Gray Show" continued in the second quarter for Ballard as he slipped free for 12 more points, including 2 three pointers. Unfortunately for Roosevelt, instead of doing it all himself at the offensive end, this time Gray received help from Beaver Keauntea Bankhead. A star runningback in football, Bankhead contributed 11 points in the second quarter as Ballard cut into the Rider lead to trail by only 2 (43-41) at the end of an action-packed first half. Williams and Nicholes continued their scoring ways for the Riders in the second quarter by scoring 6 and 5 points respectively to pace Roosevelt in the quarter. Halftime came with Cody Gray having scored 26 points. He and Bankhead combined for 39 out of the Beavers 41 in the first half.
While the pace of the game slowed a bit from its frenetic first-half pace in the third quarter, the major participants for Ballard remained the same. Gray and Bankhead combined to score all 14 of Ballard's points in the third, eventually allowing them to take a 2 point lead at 55-53 as the clock wound to close at the end of the period. Poor clock awareness caused the Riders' Cleary Clark to throw up deep three which fell to give the Riders the lead back at 56-55 and steal momentum from the Beavers. Also damaging for the Beavers was the awakening of Roosevelt's Casey Pursell, who carried the Riders with 6 points in the third to go along with his normally stout defense. The Riders' Jullian Evans provided a post presence by knocking down a couple shots in the third as well.
The lack of distributed scoring started to catch up with Ballard in the fourth quarter, as the Rider defense finally started clamping down on the Beavers' Cody Gray, "holding" him to 5 points in the final period. At the offensive end Casey Pursell continued to shine, knocking down 4 more crucial buckets in the 4th quarter to finish with 18 points, 14 in the second half. Marcus Williams scored 12 in the 4th, including some clutch free throw shooting (5-6 in the final minute of the game) to help extend the lead and ice the exciting 81-72 victory for Roosevelt.
Ballard's Cody Gray led all scorers with 41 points, including an impressive 9 threes, while Keauntea Bankhead pumped in 23 points for the Beavers in the losing cause. Marcus Williams led the Riders with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Kyle Nicholes chipped with 16 for Roosevelt. Roosevelt posts Jullian Evans (7 points, 8 rebounds) and Cleary Clark (9 points, 5 rebounds) also contributed solid games.

It was a seniors-only starting lineup for Roosevelt, with Warren Ichoda-Cummings, Kyle Nicholes, Calvin Hsia, Alex Jessup, and John Chevigny filling out the lineup for the opening tip off. The seniors proved ready to go as they quickly went on a 16-0 run to open the contest. 6' 2" guard Warren Ichoda-Cummings led the way at the offensive end for the Riders, scoring 9 points on perfect shooting (2-2 from the field, 1 3-pointer, 4-4 from the line) during the run. But Juanita went on a run of their own, refusing to quit and getting back into the game by scoring the next 13 points and narrowing the gap to 16-13. The Riders stretched the lead back out to 10 points (26-16), but again the Rebels rallied narrowing the gap to 4 (34-30) at the half.
Juanita was able to stay in the game in the first half despite foul problems by Jacob Leslie. Leslie, who scored 43 points in the teams double-OT January 17th encounter, was saddled with 2 early fouls, played limited minutes, and was held to 6 points total in the first 2 quarters. The Rebels stayed close thanks to the scoring of Bradley Clapp (10 points in the second quarter) and rebounding of Jim Murphy (5 first-half rebounds). To go along with Ichoda-Cummings' nine first quarter points, the Riders got first-half offensive production from Jullian Evans (6 points on 3-4 shooting) and Kyle Nicholes (8 points, all in second period). Alex Jessup also had an outstanding first half, grabbing a career high of 9 boards (his total for the game) to go along with 3 first half points. Seniors John Chevigny and Cleary Clark also chipped in 4 points each in the first half.
The third quarter was more of the second, with the Riders' lead bouncing between 5 and 10 points before a double-teamed, fading, hand-in-his-face, buzzer-beating 3-pointer by the Rebels' Jacob Leslie at the end of the third narrowed the gap to just 3 points (44-41) and set the stage for a closely fought 4th.
In the fourth, Juanita continued to hang tough and chip away at the lead until they finally got their chance to take a lead of their own. With under 3 minutes left in the contest, Juanita got the ball down by just 2 points (48-46) and swung the ball to 6' 4" Bradley Clapp, who drained an open 3-pointer to give Juanita its first lead of the contest (49-48). The teams traded points and the lead for the next several minutes until Clapp sunk 2 free throws to give the Rebels a 3 point lead with 30 seconds remaining in the contest (55-52). The Riders narrowed the lead to 1 point (55-54) on a Cleary Clark put back with 19.8 seconds remaining in the contest, calling timeout immediately after the basket. Forced into a position where they had to foul, the Riders fouled Juanita's Bradley Clapp with 14 seconds left to put him at the line. Clapp missed the front end of the one-and-one and Roosevelt immediately called time-out again to setup their last attempt. After the timeout, Marcus Williams used a Jullian Evans screen to get open for a jumper in the lane which he sank with 8 seconds remaining to give the Riders the lead back 56-55. Out of time-outs, Juanita immediately in bounded the ball and quickly brought it up court. In the frenetic last couple of seconds they found Jacob Leslie in the corner. Leslie's desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer bounced off and the Riders had escaped with the win.
Rebel Bradley Clapp's 22 points (to go along with 5 rebounds) led all scorers. Juanita guards Jacob Leslie and Jonas Nelson also finished in double-figures with 15 and 12 points respectively, and Rebel post Jim Murphy had 8 rebounds in the loss. The Riders were led by Jullian Evans 16 points (6-8 FGs, 4-4 FTs, 7 rebounds).
The victory, coupled with Bothell's loss to Franklin, allowed Roosevelt to clinch second place in the Mountain Division of KingCo 4A. This means that the Riders will be hosting a first round KingCo 4A playoff game at Ben Snowden Court on Tues, Feb 25th.

Vs. Franklin: Feb 18, 2003
There was a pre-game buzz as the state's #1 4A team, the Franklin Quakers, came to Roosevelt's Ben Snowden Court. In the previous December meetings between the teams, the Riders had upset the Quakers at Franklin as a number of the Quakers sat serving a suspension for team rules violations (missing curfew during a road trip to a tournament in Spokane). Both teams had something to prove in the contest; Franklin wanted to avenge their previous loss while the Riders wanted to prove that their previous victory was no fluke. University of Washington Head Coach Lorenzo Romar (accompanied by UW assistant coach Ken Bone) were among those in attendance to check out the rivalry as well as a number of the local prospects.
Franklin opened up a 10-point margin in the game's opening minutes, outscoring Roosevelt 14-4 after the opening tap. University of Oregon-bound 6' 0" senior point guard Aaron Brooks kickstarted the Quakers by scoring 9 first-quarter points (all on 3 point plays; 2 behind the arc, one bucket plus the foul) before getting in foul trouble with his second foul. But Roosevelt rallied to narrow the gap to 2 points (19-17) late in the first quarter with tough work at the defensive end and behind the scoring of Kyle Nicholes, Jullian Evans, and Casey Pursell (7, 4, and 4 points in the 1st quarter respectively). Unfortunately, Franklin went on a 9-0 straddling the end of the 1st quarter and beginning of the second quarter to build an 11-point bulge (28-17). The teams traded baskets pretty evenly for the remainder of the half as Franklin extended their lead to 15 (48-33) at the break. Franklin shot an impressive 17-30 from the field (4-6 from behind the arc) and 10-11 from the line in the first half in taking the lead. Franklin 6' 5" senior post Kellen Williams scored 16 points in the first half as Brooks ended the first 2 quarters with 11.
In the third quarter, the teams traded baskets at the beginning of the half. Franklin wasn't able to extend their lead much past the 15 point margin they had at half, nor was Roosevelt able to cut much into the margin. The lead flucuated between 10 and 17 points for much of the quarter. While holding a 14 point edge, Quakers' Head Coach Jason Kerr received a technical foul after straying too far from the bench protesting the lack of a foul call at the Franklin offensive end with about a minute left in the quarter. The "T" gave the Riders the opportunity to narrow the gap to a manageable 10 as the 3rd quarter was closing. Unfortunately, the Riders failed to convert on either of the free throw attempts or at the offensive end and Franklin was able to close out the quarter with a 14 point lead (65-51). Casey Pursell led the Riders' comeback effort with 8 third quarter points, getting help at the offensive end from Kyle Nicholes and Marcus Williams (who each had 5 in the quarter). Kellen Williams, Aaron Brooks, and Darryl Taylor all scored 4 in the quarter for the Quakers.
The Riders would get no closer, as the Quakers would outscore the Riders by 10 in the 4th to pull away and ice the game 91-67, punctuated with a Kellen Williams breakaway two-handed dunk in the closing minutes. Franklin's Lyndale Burleson would also distinguish himself in the 4th by scoring 8 points. Just as the Quakers had done throughout the contest (more on this later), Frankin made 8-10 free throws down the stretch.
One of the differences in the game was the disparity at the free throw stripe, with Franklin converting 25 of 29 in the contest (for a stellar 86.2%) while Roosevelt struggled shooting only 47.8% (11-23) from the line in the game. As for individual stars, Franklin's Kellen Williams had another outstanding game against the Riders. After going for 29 points and 19 rebounds in the teams' December 12th matchup, the Quakers' Williams dominated the paint this time as well going for a game high 24 points (8-12 FGs, 8-9 FTs) and 18 rebounds. After sitting out the previous matchup, Frankin's all-league guard Aaron Brooks also lived up to the hype, scoring 19 points while dishing out 3 assists and grabbing 3 boards. Additionally, 2 more players finished in double-figures for the state's currently #1 ranked 4A team, with both Lyndale Burleson and Zenrique Tellez finishing with 12 points. Roosevelt also finished with 4 players in double figures (Williams, Pursell, Nicholes, and Evans) with Marcus Williams leading the way in the losing cause with 20 points.
While the game had a great deal of meaning as far as pride and revenge were concerned, standings-wise the game was meaningless; both Franklin (1st, Mountain; 18-2 overall, 13-1 league) and Roosevelt (2nd, Mountain; 9-11 overall, 7-7 league) had previously wrapped up their positions for the KingCo 4A playoffs. Franklin was able to avenge its only loss to a state team this season with the victory. The Riders finished in a tie with Bothell (identical 7-7 records) for second place in the Mountain Division of KingCo 4A, but the Riders receive the second seed because of tie-breaker rules (number of wins in division: Roosevelt - 6, Bothell - 5). Roosevelt opens the KingCo 4A playoffs next Thursday against Lakes Division #3 seed Inglemoor (14-6 overall, 10-5 league). Inglemoor and Roosevelt had their only previous meeting this year on January 14th at Inglemoor in a close game that the Vikings won 62-58.

PLAYOFF SUMMARIES
Vs. Inglemoor: Feb 25, 2003
The Roughriders (2nd seed in the Mountain Division of KingCo 4A) hosted the Inglemoor Vikings (3rd seed in the Lake Division) in the first home playoff game at Roosevelt in a number of years. The Vikings jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead early (behind 4 of Jeff Ratti's game total of 6 points) in the contest, but after a timeout the Riders righted their ship and came back to knot the score at 8-8. The two teams played even basketball for the next quarter or so, when (with the score 20-18 Inglemoor) the Vikings rattled off a 14-2 run to end the half with a 14 point lead. Inglemoor's Benny Thompson and Mark Frisbee both nailed 3-pointers during the streak. The Vikings were led by 6' 5" forward Phil Lehmann's 9 first-half points, while 6' 0" junior guard Ken Nwaelele came off the bench to add 7 over the first 2 quarters for Inglemoor. Roosevelt was led in first-half scoring by Marcus Williams and Jullian Evans, who both tallied 6 points.
The Riders were able to narrow the gap early in the second half. Led by early steals and converted buckets by Casey Pursell and Kyle Nicholes, post offense by Jullian Evans, and a thunderous dunk off a steal by Marcus Williams, the Riders were able to trim the Inglemoor lead to 7 at 40-33 late in the third quarter. But near the end of the third, the Vikings started on another run (this time a 18-6 streak) which found them staked to a 19-point advantage (58-39) late in the 4th, all but ending the contest. Inglemoor eventually cleared the bench and finished off the hard-fought, physical 66-47 victory.
Inglemoor reserve Ken Nwaelele led all scorers with 16. Phil Lehmann and Steve Anderson also chipped in 14 and 10 respectively for the Vikings. A tough shooting night did in the Riders, as they shot 28.6% (18-63) from the field in the game, including 1 for 12 from behind the arc. Marcus Williams and Jullian Evans were the only Roosevelt players to finish in double figures, with each player scoring 12 points.
Inglemoor plays at Eastlake (who waltzed through Lake Washington 87-48 to advance) on Friday (2/28) with a berth in the KingCo 4A Tournament Championship game at stake. Roosevelt plays host to Lake Washington on Friday (2/28) in a loser's out contest. If the Riders win on Friday they will play again next Tuesday, hosting the winner of this Friday's Redmond at Bothell game. If they lose, their season would be over.

Vs. Lake Washington: February 28, 2003
This playoff matchup was a familiar one for both teams, the third meeting of the year between Lake Washington and Roosevelt. Roosevelt had come out on top in the previous meetings, but as Coach Sarmiento had said the day before to the Riders, "Remember, it is very difficult to beat a team three times in one year." The fact that this game was a loser-out KingCo 4A Conference Playoff Game brought on extra urgency for both squads.
Sparked by Casey Pursell's 6 points and Marcus Williams' 5 points, Roosevelt held a 17-14 lead after one quarter. The Riders did an excellent job bottling up Lake Washington's 6' 3" junior forward Andrew Haskins (the league's leading scorer) in the first period, holding him to only 3 points. The same couldn't be said during the second quarter, as Haskins went for 14 points and combined with 6' 2" sophomore guard Ryan Staudacher (7 points in second quarter) to score all but 2 of the Kangaroos' 23 second-quarter points. Lake Washington was able to take a - point lead to the locker room (37-36) thanks to the second quarter splurge. Haskins' 1st-half 17 points led all scorers, and Staudacher chipped in another 10 (including 2 3's) for the Kangs. Marcus Williams' 11 points (to go along with 7 first half rebounds) paced Roosevelt, with Casey Pursell also knocking down 10 points.
Lake Washington took advantage of Roosevelt turnovers and a continuation of the "Haskins and Staudacher" show to build large lead in the third quarter. In the third, Haskins (11 points in 3rd) and Staudacher (7 points in 3rd) combined for 18 of the Kangs' 23 points. Despite the fact that the Riders shot well (54.5%) in the quarter, they were limited in their shooting opportunities by turnovers. All this added up to Lake Washington building their largest lead of the game at 60-48 with under 2 minutes left in the third.
But Roosevelt continued to fight back. This time it was the Kangaroos' turn to have a case of the turnovers, as the Riders used full-court pressure and hard man-to-man half-court defense to force the Kangaroos into mistakes. At the offensive end of the court, the Riders used the scoring of Marcus Williams (14 points in 4th) and Norris Frederick (8 points in 4th) to slowly claw their way back into the contest. With 35 seconds left in the game, Frederick made a layup to tie the game at 74-74. Shortly after forcing a Lake Washington turnover, Kyle Nicholes hit a 10 foot runner from the left side with 12.5 seconds left, to give the Riders their first lead of the second half as the Rider home playoff crowd went wild. After a Kangaroo timeout, Lake Washington inbounded the ball to Andrew Haskins, who brought the ball the length of the court, eluded several Roosevelt defenders, and got off a 12-foot floater in the lane under duress with 6 seconds left. The shot rimmed out, but LW's Antonio Davis (who had missed the front end of several one-on-ones in the closing minutes, aiding the Rider comeback) was there for the put-back, tying the game at 76-76 with 4 seconds left. It was the only score that Davis would make in the contest, but they were an immensely important 2 points. Without any timeouts remaining, Roosevelt was forced to quickly inbound the ball and take a desperation shot which missed. The game would head to overtime.
In the 4 minute overtime, Lake Washington built a 87-82 lead with a little under a minute left. But again the Riders fought back. Kyle Nicholes narrowed the gap to 87-85 on a three pointer. After forcing Lake Washington into a turnover, Marcus Williams nailed a fading, closely contested jumper from near the free throw line to knot the game at 87-87 with under 25 seconds left. After another Kangaroo timeout, Haskins again took what could have been the game deciding shot (with 10 seconds left), this time a 3-pointer from the right hand wing. Again it missed, this time rimming out long to Lake Washington's Staudacher who backed the ball out to the left hand wing. Staudacher kicked the ball to Antonio Davis in the left hand corner with 4 seconds left, where Davis immediately found a cutting Haskins for a 6 foot, banking leaner from the left block. This time Haskins' shot found its mark and the Kangaroos led (89-87) with under 2 seconds left. Out of timeouts, Roosevelt was unable to get the ball in bounds before time expired.
Haskins scored the last 10 points of the contest and 11 points in overtime to finish with 43 points. The LW star also had 9 rebounds in the contest. Staudacher helped carry some of the additional slack by scoring 19 (7 rebounds), and Kang 6' 0" senior guard Arron Washington also added 12 points.
For Roosevelt, Marcus Williams tallied 33 points and 14 rebounds in the loss. Norris Frederick also poured in 20 for the Roughriders, with Kyle Nicholes and Casey Pursell also finishing in double figures (with 10 and 13 points respectively).
The victory allowed Lake Washington to advance in the losers bracket to play Garfield in the next round of the playoffs. The loss knocked the Riders out of the KingCo 4A Playoffs and concluded a 9-13 overall, 7-7 league year.
